Day 27 - Las Herrerias to Fonfria

Today's route is officially 12km, but we had already done 3.7km of that yesterday so we were adding some of tomorrow's route to take us to about 20km.

We left Las Herrerias about 6.45am. You are able to rent horses from here to take you up the hill, but we felt it was a bit unfair on them so we climbed it ourselves!

We headed to the first village, La Faba, for breakfast by which point we were already at 900m. The views gradually became more amazing!

View from our breakfast stop...

After a leisurely breakfast we continued up, through the small hamlet of La Laguna and into Galicia, our last spanish region.

From there we kept going to O Cebreiro. It was a charming place and it was definitely time for a drink! Most unexpectedly we were welcomed by a piper!!

As we descended the otherside of O Cebreiro, we found ourselves above the clouds once more. The views were just beautiful.

Descent was not really the word however as we wound up and down for quite a way, passing a pilgrim statue at Alto de San Roque, at 1270m.

We were hoping to reach Hospital de la Condesa for lunch. Unfortunately it was tiny and when we arrived the only bar was crammed, so we pushed on past their beautiful old church to the next stop.

Alto de Polo was the highest point of the day and required a very steep climb at the end. However there was a very nice bar at the top and it was time for lunch!

We only had 3km to do after that to our next stop in Fonfria. What a fabulous accommodation! Purpose built hostal, with beautiful modern rooms.

After showers and quick laundry run, it was drinks in the front garden before a great meal and an early night!
