Day 5 - Puente la Reina to Estella
Overall a great day and in relative terms easy?! It was designated as green at least, and the map looked pretty easy going. I should say that the stage maps that I share each day run from right to left as we are walking East to West, so it aligns with the actual map below.
After breakfast in the local bakery we headed out of Puente la Reina over the puente just before 8am!
The best view of it was from the new puente.
The walk started easily on a wide track out of Puente la Reina.
However despite the book, things didn't stay flat for long and the route was long and sometimes steep, but we eventually arrived in Maneru for a refreshment break. Then it was on up towards Cirauqui, which we could see from a distance on the horizon.
One of the fun parts of the route is that you keep bumping into the same folk, and as you do you eventually start up conversations and find out where they are from. If you forget to ask their names you then have to give them nicknames. So the lady from Georgia (US) was Georgia for 2 days, before we overheard that her name was Roberta! A few we met before Pamplona were stopping there or perhaps having 2 nights there so the people come and go. Have to say the vast majority are from the US.
After lunch we headed on thinking we would grab a beer in Villatuerta but it was not to be! No bars open and not even the supermercado! Definitely siesta time, so photographed their church and walked on.
For some reason the last 5k is always the hardest and the heat was bad today so when we finally reached Estella it was into the first bar for a beer before even finding the accommodation!!
When we did check in we were pleasantly surprised! It is all hostal but we had a private room at the top for the 4 of us. So showers and out for dinner. Great evening. Long day tomorrow!
