Day 21 - Leon to San Martin del Camino

After a lovely meal last, where poor Martin barely ate, he was unfortunately sick all night so didn't walk with us today. Mitch had his new shoes on, so he did and we were five!

We left Leon a bit later than planned after a struggle dropping our bags as the whole city was either in bed or still up and heading home.





It was a long walk out of the city and unfortunately there were no cafes open. In the end we stopped at a petrol station for some food, coffee and cold drinks.


The walk wasn't pretty and was mainly alongside a road. But the villages are always interesting!!

La Virgen del Camino also showed the 300km to go mark!!


We headed to Valverde de la Virgen at 11.5km thinking we could have a sit down and something to eat. 




The first bar we reached was open so we took off the back packs found a table in the shade and went in to order. No food! We had drinks and crisps to keep our salt levels up! 

At this point Mitch decided it was best not to keep walking as his feet were starting to be painful. And so he called Martin so they could meet up and head to the Albergue.

We had about another 10km to go to complete the stage but we were going into the next stage, so with nowhere to stop we just ploughed on. 

Finally we reached Villadangos del Paramo. As it is the end of one of the 'official' stages, we figured there would be plenty of options. 

We stopped at the first bar and ordered drinks. We asked for menus, but they were only doing a set menus for 22€, which wasn't really what we were after. We couldnt find anywhere else in the village, so on we went to the end!




Finally we reached San Martin del Camino, it was worth the effort! What a stunning Albergue! With a pool in the garden! 


We finally managed some food and showers, and of course there was washing to be done and then dinner! 

We haven't had a storm for a while but there is one raging now, with torrential rain, thunder and lightning, so that will hopefully bring the temperature down a bit!

Long travel day (T -2)

We have arrived in Bayonne, which is beautiful!! Pictures to follow.   For Mitch and I it was a 3.45am alarm call and then a lift to the airport from Finlay at 4am for a 6am flight to Stanstead. We met Fiona and Martin and took a flight to Biarritz in the afternoon. Martin and I weren't told about the dress code! We spotted the Pyrenees as we landed, they look very high to be crossing them on the first days walk. It was a quick and easy bus journey from the airport to our hotel in Bayonne (Okko Hotel). After a quick shower and a drink in the hotel we headed into Bayonne for dinner, and walked along the river back to the hotel.  So far it feels like a lovely holiday as we keep trying to forget the upcoming walking!!!

Almost ready... (T -5)

Started to lay out all our things for the trip. Figured out what was missing and then a quick shopping trip. Home to watch The Way. We have seen it before, it was probably part of the inspiration for us to walk it.  Watching it again is more poignant with only 3 days till we fly to France.

Arriving in St. Jean Pied de Port (T -1)

After a coffee in the Okko Hotel we checked out and headed back along the river to the centre of Bayonne and over the bridge towards the station. A quick breakfast which was suitably French and we reached the station, ready for the last leg of the journey to get to the starting point of the walk!! An hour on an impressively clean and comfortable train and we are finally in St Jean PdP! Our first camino route marker!! The starting point in St Jean PdP Picturesque St Jean PdP Lunch wasn't too shabby!! After lunch we went to the Pilgrim's office to collect our Pilgrim Credential and our first stamp!! It is all very real now!! 😲 And then a final meal before bed!
