Day 2 - Roncesvalles to Zubiri
I wanted to share a photo from our meal last night with the other pilgrims.
We all slept to some degree as the bunks are in cubicles of 2 up, 2 down, so we had our own area. We were woken around 6am as the lights went on and folk started to rise, as we got ready the monks began to sing, what an uplifting way to start the day! One last photo from the Monastery courtyard and we were on our way about 7.20am.
We walked to the first village for the obligatory croissant and coffee, but only after the obligatory picture at the road sign to Santiago.
We don't still have 790km to go, that is by road, so this is more correct for those walking the Camino. Don't get me wrong 755km is still a long way!!!
After breakfast in Burguete, we walked on to Espinala and then via a bit of a climb to Bizkarreta-Gerendiain where we stopped for lunch.
All the villages are picturesque and well kept and between them the walk was mainly on trails and often through trees which helped keep the temperature down a bit! It was up over 30°C most of today so any shade was welcome!
After lunch we climbed again, the climbs today more short and sharp but still tough on the legs. And finally we descended into Zubiri. What a descent! Steep and fast and on stone that was broken, in channels vertically down the slope, the large flat sloping areas that looked like you would slide as soon as you set foot on them! A killer on the knees and the toes, but we are here.
Fiona has booked great accommodation once again, Casa Rural Txantxorena (don't ask me to pronounce it!!)
The landing on the first floor is huge and the bedrooms just fab!
Dinner in the bar next door, basically sitting under our windows! Definitely going to be a nice short walk home!!
Route for today although we didn't go all the way to Larrasoana today so will do that bit tomorrow.
Well done!! At least we can relate on weather conditions now 😂🥰💕
