Day 13 - Burgos to Hornillos del Camino

Image
Burgos was quite the party city!! They music in the street stopped not long before 4am, and as we left the apartment we passed 4 young lads fast asleep on benches in the street. We also passed the incredible cathedral. How can we have never even heard of a city that has a such an amazing building! We also we on storks spotting duty! I think the record was three nests on one building!! On the outskirts of Burgos we found a cafe open, clearly the festivities the night before had slowed everyone down!! Had a lovely breakfast and we were on our way.  The route was a bit weird, we never even saw the first town on the map at 6.2km, so we continued on and wound under motorway bridges until we reached Tardajos. We stopped for a snack and a drink and then a quick trip to the pharmacy for more blister supplies. The next village, Rabe de las Calzadas, was only 2 km away but as it was the last one before a long walk to Hornillos del Camino, we stopped again for a quick drink and an ice cream! ...

Day 12 - San Juan de Ortega to Burgos

Image
Today was a long one! 27.5km according to the book. We left San Juan de Ortega first thing. We headed to the first village of Ages for breakfast. It was a really pretty village.   From there it was an easy stroll to Atupuerca.  Historically significant for having bone fragments from 800,000 years ago!! Anyway it was a icecream and a drink for us and we went on up the Matagrande. It was short and steep to a cross at the top.  From the descent we could see Burgos Through a few more villages.  and then a e w road into Burgos.  ) Finally a long road into Burgos.   ] The apartment is fabulous, so it was showers, washing and then out for a wee tapas tour!! Bumped in to the lovely Sara from Wales and a bunch of others that we met from the start. What fun!!  Today's route...

Day 11 - Belorado to San Juan de Ortega

Image
Well today was a toughie!! 24km in the book with a sprinkling of villages in the first half, but a killer of a second half!! We noticed last night that Belorado had some interesting cave dwellings behind the hotel and the church. Originally they were inhabited by hermits, but we were told they are used for wine storage! We left Belorado early after just a coffee in the hotel. The wall art was amazing on the town and sometimes turning to look back is the best view. We walked to Tosantos for breakfast. Before reaching Villafranca Montes de Oca for lunch we passed another cave dwellings that looked like a church, we passed through a few villages and also pass the 550km to go sign!! pp After lunch with more than 12km still to go we were going steeple up hill. The sun was hot but there were trees on the route and the occasional breeze, so we managed ok for a while. We reached a memorial to 300 people who were shot in 1936 during the Spanish civil war for not being on the 'right' sid...

Day 10 - Sto. Domingo de la Calazada to Belorado

Image
What a lovely day!  23km according to the book, with villages all the way along, which really broke the journey up and made everything feel manageable. It was still very hot, but not many hills, so that helped too. We left the Parador at about 7.30 am, and as we were on the West side of town, we didn't find anywhere for breakfast before we had left Santo Domingo de la Calazada behind, so we walked the first 6km to Granon before stopping for food.  As we walked into Granon we met a South African couple who we have seen along the route, walking towards us. We stopped to talk to them and they were heading for the bus and then home. They were gutted to be leaving and already planning to return next year to continue from this point! Lovely little bar and great food in Granon and another amazing church for a small village. Not least the flower petal display on the floor and the most beautiful stained glass window. After leaving Granon, we also left the region of Rioja and entered Ca...
